Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has indicated that goalkeeper Marco Silvestri’s time may not be up at Elland Road, and he is happy with the way the Italian has responded to his situation at the club, though he has challenged him to keep proving his worth.

Silvestri’s future at Leeds has been under the scanner since they snapped up veteran goalkeeper Robert Green on a free transfer this summer, and he was sent back from their pre-season training camp in Ireland.

The 25-year-old missed Leeds’ first two pre-season friendlies and was not even part of the development squad fixtures, leading to speculation that he is on his way out.

However, Silvestri completed 45 minutes and conceded three goals in Leeds’ 4-3 win over Guiseley last night, and Monk insisted that the goalkeeper could still be in his plans for the new season.

The Leeds boss is happy with the way the Italian has worked on the few areas he identified during pre-season, and is again back in contention for place in his squad.

Monk told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Everyone’s fighting for their place, let’s make no mistake about that.

“I came here with a blank, open mind and a blank canvas to work with. Part of that is every player has an opportunity.

“There were certain things with Marco that I spoke to him about, that I thought he could improve on and I wanted to see.

"Especially at the start I didn’t quite see them but I’ve had a good reaction from Marco and he’s put himself back in the fold.

"That’s what it’s about.

“It’s about proving a point and you have to do that every single day, not just when you feel like it.”

Silvestri joined Leeds from Chievo in 2014 and has clocked up 92 appearances in the last couple of seasons.
