Marseille have not lost hope of signing Newcastle United winger Florian Thauvin despite Lazio agreeing a deal with the Magpies for the Frenchman.

The Ligue 1 outfit have been interested in signing the Frenchman, but have struggled to find an agreement with Newcastle, who have been unwilling to gift wrap Thauvin for Marseille.

Lazio have taken a decisive step towards signing Thauvin in the last few days, and have reportedly agreed an initial loan fee with an obligation to sign him on a permanent deal later.

Thauvin is expected to move to Italy in the coming days to finalise the deal, but according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Marseille are still hopeful of signing the winger.

The Frenchman has been interested in a move back to his former club, and Marseille are hoping to work on the personal preference of player to return to France.

However, Lazio remain the front runners to get a deal over the line for Thauvin and sign him in on a loan deal in the upcoming days.

Newcastle signed Thauvin from Marseille last summer, but after a poor run he was loaned back to the Ligue 1 outfit in January until the end of last season.
