Roma's first choice to add a central defender to their ranks is former Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, but if no deal can be done for the Belgian they could turn to Tottenham Hotspur's Federico Fazio.

The Giallorossi are actively looking to sign a centre-back following an injury to Antonio Rudiger earlier this summer. However, Roma do not want to make a large financial commitment to fill the gap in the German's absence.

According to Sky Italia, Vermaelen is the club's first choice and Roma are keen to sign the former Arsenal man on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with a right to buy if he impresses.

No deal has be done between Roma and Barcelona yet though because the Catalan giants are demanding €15m for the defender.

And if Roma cannot reach an agreement with Barcelona, Fazio will become a serious option.

Other defenders are also on the radar of the Serie A side, with Schalke's Sead Kolasinac and Real Madrid's Nacho two players Roma have in mind.
