Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has insisted that Charlie Taylor remains an important player for him, but admits that the final decision on the defender’s future will be taken by the club hierarchy.

The Yorkshire giants were rocked on Sunday night when the 22-year-old left-back, through his agent, submitted a transfer request, leading to speculation surrounding his future.

His current contract with Leeds expires at the end of next season, and talks over a new deal have been stalled for some time, as the club and the player are yet to agree terms.

However, Leeds rejected the transfer request from Taylor and Massimo Cellino is in no mood to allow the player to leave this summer.

Monk stressed that the defender has been an utmost professional in training, and remains an important player for him ahead of the start of the new season.

But Monk admits that the final decision on Taylor’s future at Elland Road will be taken by the Leeds hierarchy.

The Leeds boss said on BBC Radio 5 live on Tuesday night: “Charlie has been great, he has been really focused.

“At the end of the day the club will always make the decision.

"People tend to forget, whatever happens in terms of players comings and goings, the club will always make the final decision.

“We are focused, and Charlie is committed enough. He has not shown any signs or anything else. He is an important player to me.

“As far as we are concerned he is a Leeds United player, and he will be ready for the first game of the season.”

Taylor has generated interest from Premier League clubs, with West Brom believed to be keeping a close watch on the unfolding saga at Elland Road.
