Rangers are targeting Joleon Lescott and would prefer to sign the Aston Villa man instead of Philippe Senderos.

Gers boss Mark Warburton is looking to add another central defender to his squad before the transfer window closes and has recently taken Senderos on trial.

The former Arsenal and AC Milan man is training with Rangers all this week in a bid to impress Warburton; Senderos is a free agent after leaving Swiss side Grasshopper.

But Senderos is not Warburton's first choice, according to radio station Clyde 1.

Indeed, Warburton has set his sights on Aston Villa man Lescott, someone the Villa Park outfit are prepared to allow to leave for free.

Lescott has been linked with Leeds United already this summer, but it is unclear how firm the Whites' interest is in the former Manchester City star.

The defender struggled at Villa Park last term and attracted fierce criticism for his performances as the club finished bottom of the Premier League table.

But Warburton appears to believe that Lescott could do a job for Rangers in the Scottish top flight.
