Napoli are set to initiate contact with Manchester United to probe the possibility of signing Matteo Darmian this summer.

The Italian international didn’t feature in Jose Mourinho’s matchday squad against Bournemouth on Sunday, and it was the same in the Community Shield against Leicester City earlier this month.

While Mourinho has maintained that everyone will get opportunities over the course of the season, there has been speculation that the 26-year-old full-back could be on the chopping block this month.

And according to Sky Italia, Napoli are keen to explore the possibility of taking Darmian back to England and are set to initiate contact with Manchester United in the coming days.

The Serie A giants want to enquire about whether Manchester United are ready to sit at the negotiating table for Darmian’s departure, before they approach the player with their offer.

Darmian joined Manchester United from Torino last summer, and after an impressive start to his career at Old Trafford, his form deteriorated over the course of last season.

If Manchester United agree to sell the player, Napoli could face competition from Juventus and Roma for the Italian international’s signature.

Darmian has a contract until 2019 with the Red Devils.
