Southampton are unlikely to agree to sell Portuguese defender Jose Fonte, despite interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

Following consistent performances in the Premier League over the last few seasons, coupled with a successful European Championship campaign with Portugal, the veteran defender’s stock has risen in the transfer market.

There is speculation that Jose Mourinho is planning to make his countryman his last signing of the summer at Manchester United as he looks to add more experience to his backline.

It has been suggested that Manchester United have been holding informal talks with the player’s agent to reach an agreement.

Even Arsenal are said to be interested in the player, as their defender search continues this summer, but it has been claimed that Southampton are in no mood to let Fonte go this summer.

According BBC Radio Solent, the south coast club have no intention of selling their defensive lynchpin, and are getting ready to resist any offer that might land on their table this month for the Portuguese.

Fonte joined Southampton in 2010 when they were in League One, and has played a big role in their rise through the English football pyramid over the last few years.

However, it remains to be seen whether the 32-year-old himself would be ready to resist an offer from one of England’s bigwigs this month to continue at St. Mary’s.
