Newcastle United have contacted Dutch outfit FC Utrecht to enquire about the possibility of signing striker Sebastien Haller this month.

The Magpies are one of the favourites to earn automatic promotion to the Premier League this season, but have not made one of the best starts to their Championship campaign, even with a 4-1 win last night over Reading.

Losing two of their first three games, the recently relegated north east giants have stumbled in England’s second tier in the initial weeks despite being one of the heavy spenders in the division.

However, Rafael Benitez is expected to sign a few more players this month, and according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Utrecht striker Haller could be one of the new names who could join Newcastle in the next couple of weeks.

The Magpies touched base with the Dutch outfit in recent days to probe the possibility of signing the 22-year-old striker, who scored 24 goals in all competitions last season.

Haller recently rejected a big money move to China as he wants to continue playing in a top European league, and is also generating interest from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.

The forward has also been linked with a move to Sunderland and Everton this summer, but the trail has gone cold in recent weeks.

He has a contract until 2019 with Utrecht, and has already scored two Eredivisie goals in as many games this season.
