Arsenal and Liverpool target Shkodran Mustafi has returned to training with the Valencia squad and could feature in their opening game of the season on Monday night, according to Valencia-based daily Super Deporte.

The 24-year-old German defender has been incessantly linked with a move to Arsenal over the last few weeks, with suggestions that he has agreed personal terms with the north London outfit.

However, the Gunners are struggling to reach an agreement with Valencia, who are keen to hold on to the player, but will only sell if they receive a fee north of €30m.

Arsenal are reportedly looking to save funds for a striker, and therefore, are dithering over Valencia’s financial demands for the Germany international defender.

Liverpool are also reportedly interested in the player, and have opened talks with Valencia to challenge the Gunners for Mustafi’s signature this summer.

However, amidst all the speculation, the defender returned to training with the Valencia squad yesterday, and could be named in the team for their home game against Las Palmas on Monday night.

The defender was carrying a slight niggle and therefore had been training away from the first team squad over the last couple of weeks.

With his return to the first team set-up, it is becoming clear that Valencia are not ready to sell the player as long as one of his suitors don’t match their asking price for Mustafi.

The defender has a contract until 2019 with the club.
