Aston Villa owner Dr Tony Xia insists he is telling the truth over why Joleon Lescott's switch to Rangers broke down.

Lescott was poised to join the Gers from Villa and travelled to Scotland for a medical. However, on Friday the deal collapsed, with the centre-back opting not to join the Scottish giants.

Xia says promises were made over personal terms at Rangers which were not kept and wrote on Twitter: "Lescott didn't feel happy with personal term missed which the boss promised. RDM [Roberto Di Matteo] and I are men clear with words!"

But on Saturday, Rangers boss Mark Warburton hit back at Xia and said suggestions that the deal collapsed over personal terms were "absolute nonsense" as he explained Lescott simply decided not to go through with the move for family reasons.

And Xia has not taken kindly to Warburton's words.

Asked on Twitter for his view on Warburton's comments, Xia said: "I don't know others. I don't lie and I know RDM is very honest."

Lescott has now returned to Aston Villa, though the Championship side remain keen to offload him, despite him still having a year left on his contract at the club.

Rangers meanwhile are expected to move to snap up free agent Philippe Senderos as they look to bolster their centre-back options.
