Aston Villa chairman Dr Tony Xia has wasted little time in stamping on outlandish rumours that the club are closing in on signing Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.

Speculation of a move for Drogba to Villa Park was peddled on social media – but the 38-year-old is not signing for the Championship club.

Xia was asked about claims on social media that Villa are set to sign Drogba and shot back on Twitter: "Come on.

"It's not the China Villa club (maybe future will)", he joked.

Aston Villa are currently chasing the signature of a top class striker as they look to put the finishing touches to their squad before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month.

Xia's side have notably scooped up an experienced spine, with defender Tommy Elphick, midfielder Mile Jedinak and striker Ross McCormack all added.

Drogba, 38, currently turns out in Canada for Montreal Impact, who play in the MLS.

The veteran striker ended his second spell at Chelsea in 2015 to head across the pond.
