Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has taken a potshot at Bayern Munich over the Bastian Schweinsteiger saga, but admits it will be difficult for the German to play at Old Trafford this season.

Mourinho has frozen the former Germany captain out of his Manchester United first team squad, and has made it clear that he is not part of his plans this season.

Schweinsteiger on his part has maintained a dignified silence and only released a statement yesterday, saying that Manchester United will be his last club in Europe, and he is ready to play if needed.

Looking at his options in the middle of the park, Mourinho admits that it will be difficult for the veteran midfielder to find a place in his squad this term, but he didn’t completely rule out the possibility of recalling the German.

On whether the 32-year-old has a chance to play this season, Mourinho said in his press conference: "It is very difficult. Not impossible.

“But we have a decision completely made about [Paul] Pogba, [Ander] Herrera, [Morgan] Schneiderlin, [Marouane] Fellaini, [Michael] Carrick. That is my five players for two positions.”

The Manchester United boss also praised the midfielder for the way he has handled the situation.

However, Mourinho took a swipe at Bayern Munich, who have criticised Manchester United and him for the way the German legend has been treated.

On Schweinsteiger’s recent statement, he said: "I cannot answer for him. It is his life and career he has right to make that decision and that is not a problem for us.

"He is not speaking a lot and gave his last statement, which he is completely free to do in an objective and polite way. No problem.

“I thought after I read some quotes from Bayern Munich they would run to Manchester to bring him back. That did not happen. I am surprised Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is not here now."
