Leeds United legend Eddie Gray admits that the Whites cannot hope to challenge for a Championship playoff spot if they don’t shrug off their inconsistency.

After a good run of form, Leeds faltered miserably at the City Ground on Saturday when their set-piece defending again let them down as Nottingham Forest scored a 3-1 win over the Yorkshire giants.

Leeds looked to be in some kind of form after wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Luton Town, but the positivity around the team was sucked out after their limp performance against Forest.

Gray has conceded that their league showing has not been consistent enough this season despite the recent good form, and believes they had only one good result at Sheffield Wednesday.

Monk’s men have been talking about challenging for promotion, but the Leeds legend pointed out that they need to be a lot more consistent over the course of the season before thinking about getting into the top six.

Gray told LUTV: “It was disappointing for Garry and the players as well.

“They got a couple of good results, but if we actually look at the league, we only had one decent result.

“I think looking at the Fulham result, we got out of jail that night; against Sheffield Wednesday it was a good performance, but other than that we have not really done it consistently.

“And that’s what football’s all about; you got to be consistent week-in-week-out.

“The consistency, to go four or five games on the trot, win three or four, draw one or two, that’s what it is all about if you want to be in the top six.”

Leeds will return from the international break to face Huddersfield Town in a Yorkshire derby at Elland Road on 10th September.
