Hoffenheim defender Niklas Sule’s agent has revealed that Chelsea were interested in snapping up his client during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea were desperate to get their hands on a defender during the just concluded transfer window, and finally re-signed David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain on deadline day.

However, it seems Chelsea’s search for a defender also took them to Germany as there was speculation that they were interested in Sule and were prepared to offer €30m to Hoffenheim.

The 21-year-old Germany international stayed put at Hoffenheim, but his agent revealed that Chelsea could come back for the player next year, as their interest in Sule is genuine.

Speaking to German daily Bild, Karlheinz Forster said: “Yes, the interest was there.

“The English have made it clear that their interest will be valid next year too.”

Joining the Hoffenheim academy from Darmstadt in 2010, Sule has become a regular in the first team in recent years and started the first game of the season last month.

Despite just being 21, he has already notched up 84 senior appearances for Hoffenheim and has a contract until 2019 with the club.
