Shkodran Mustafi’s former Everton team-mate Jose Baxter feels the Arsenal new boy possesses similar traits to John Stones.

The 24-year-old, who spent three disappointing seasons at Everton between 2009 and 2012, joined the Gunners from Valencia on a five-year deal in the summer.

On the other hand, Stones was also on the move this summer, with Manchester City acquiring him on a big-money deal from Everton.

And Baxter, who backed Mustafi to settle nicely at Arsenal, thinks his former Toffees team-mate is a similar type of player to Stones as both are ball-playing defenders who can also operate as a defensive midfielder.

“I honestly think he’ll suit them great there”, Baxter told ITV.

“He can really play, and once he settles in he’ll do well.

"Arsenal are a footballing team and they like to get it down. In a little way he’s like John Stones.

“They’re defenders, but they could play in defensive midfield and play football."

Mustafi, who joined Sampdoria from Everton in 2012 before Valencia snapped him up in 2014, made 81 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish outfit.

He also has 13 caps and a goal for Germany to his name and was part of the nation’s 2014 World Cup winning squad.
