Toby Alderweireld has underlined the importance of pride as Tottenham Hotspur did not lose their focus despite dominating proceedings in their 4-0 win over Stoke City in the Premier League at the weekend.

Spurs, who headed into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Liverpool before the international break, took a 41st minute lead at the Bet365 Stadium through Heung- Min Son before the South Korean doubled his side’s advantage after the break.

Further goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane put Tottenham 4-0 up by the 70th minute, but the visitors did not let complacency kick in for the remainder of the game as they maintained their iron-grip on the contest.

And Alderweireld, who insisted that pride did not let Spurs relax despite being in a commanding position against Stoke, thinks the emphatic result at the weekend will boost his side’s confidence for their Champions League opener against Monaco on Wednesday.

"That pride is important – even if you are up, you don’t relax, don’t lose focus because you take that into the next game”, the centre-back told the club’s official site.
