Joe Garner has explained that the 2-1 loss against Aberdeen is a bitter pill to swallow for Rangers as he feels his side “played really well” at Pittodrie on Sunday.

The Gers, who headed into the game on the back of a three-game winless run in the Scottish Premiership, fell behind right after the break when Jonny Hayes found the back of the net.

But Andy Halliday equalised from the spot in the 79th minute, and it looked as if the visitors would return home with at least a point.

However, James Maddison’s stunning free-kick in the 90th minute handed Rangers their second league defeat in three games as Mark Warburton’s team slipped down to the bottom half of the table.

And Garner, who insisted that Rangers dominated proceedings for the majority of the match against Aberdeen, stated that his side were unfortunate not to break the deadlock in the first half.

"It is very frustrating”, the striker was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“I thought we played really well.

"The lads are disappointed. We need to start turning performances into wins.

“On another day we would have gone in 2-0 up at half-time and it would probably have been a different game. We have got to take the positives out of the game.

"The gaffer spoke about that in the dressing room afterwards. We have played well and it is tough to take, very difficult to take, that we lost.

“Aberdeen finished second last year, but we have dominated the game, especially the first half. We were unfortunate not to come in with a lead. The goal is obviously massive for them coming as it did so soon after half-time.”

Garner further urged his side to turn their possession into goals, a problem which has halted Rangers’ progress this season.

“Once they get the goal they sit back even more and it is more difficult.

"This is a physical league where teams sit behind the ball, sit back against Rangers and try and nick a goal. That is something we need to look at as a team”, he continued.

"We need to turn all the possession and the good football into goals. I think it is something we have to work on and will work on this week.”

Rangers are currently seventh in the table with just nine points from seven outings.
