Leeds Under-23s boss Jason Blunt is hopeful that Gaetano Berardi will soon return to the first team squad after playing 45 minutes for the reserves on Monday night.

The Swiss has been struggling with injuries for some time now, and despite being declared fit at the start of the season, he broke down after just 22 minutes on the opening day at Queens Park Rangers.

Berardi returned to training last week, and played a half of football for Blunt’s Under-23s in their 1-1 draw against Bristol City on Monday, in his bid to regain match fitness.

The Leeds Under-23 boss was impressed with the way the defender went about his business against Bristol City, and he is hopeful of seeing Berardi turn out for the first team in the near future.

Blunt said on LUTV: “Bera has worked extremely hard since he has been injured.

“I thought he was steady, got into some good positions, got into some good areas to put in some good crosses.

“He is a good professional and hopefully he can get back in and around the first team sooner rather than later.”

Berardi could again turn out for the Under-23s soon as he is not expected to return to the first team squad before the international break next month.
