Rangers boss Mark Warburton has been charged by the Scottish Football Association with using offensive and abusive language towards match officials during his side's 2-1 defeat against Aberdeen on Sunday.

The 54-year-old confronted the referee John Beaton at the final whistle after he penalised right-back James Tavernier for his foul on winger Jonny Hayes.

The decision proved to be costly as James Maddison found the back of the net from the resulting free-kick, breaking the visiting team's hearts as they succumbed to their second loss in four league matches.

The compliance officer of the Scottish FA has issued the Gers' boss with a Notice of Complaint and proposed a one-match ban for his conduct on the sidelines. Rangers though have the option of either accepting or fighting the ban at a hearing that would take place on 13th October.

On their official website the Scottish FA confirmed that Warburton has been charged with a breach of Rule 203, which reads: "Immediately following the conclusion of the above match you did commit misconduct in that you entered the field of play and repeatedly used offensive, abusing and insulting language towards match officials."

Speaking after the match, Warburton revealed that he had spoken to the fourth official who had told him that the referee had indeed made a mistake.

"Everyone saw the ball move", Warburton said.

"The fourth official on the sidelines saw the ball move and made a comment. And yet a free-kick is given."
