Rangers manager Mark Warburton has indicated that it would be the wrong call to drop James Tavernier from the starting eleven.

The full-back saw a foul given for a tackle from behind against Aberdeen last weekend, with the resultant free-kick seeing Rangers lose the game. But while Tavernier appeared not to have fouled Jonny Hayes, there has been criticism of Rangers' full-backs for the opening goal conceded in the 2-1 defeat.

Tavernier’s defensive and attacking work was instrumental to Rangers earning promotion to the top tier last season, and Warburton stressed that he is no mood to put the defender under the scanner after just one mistake.

The Rangers boss stressed that it would be naive to ignore a player’s qualities and drop him from the team after one error, and he is not keen to make such rash decisions with his squad.

Warburton said in a press conference: “I am not scrutinising Tav in that respect.

“You can highlight a mistake by an individual, focus on that and you can write pages and pages, if someone wants to, but then they miss out on the positives from that same person.

“If I think a player is not producing we will make the change, but you got to change players for the right reasons.

“To pick on one mistake and ignore everything else they do is fairly naive.”

Tavernier will try to turn in a defensively solid display if given an opportunity against Partick Thistle as Rangers look to get back to winning ways in front of their home fans on Saturday.
