Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has pointed at Manchester United to demonstrate how hard it would be to replace Arsene Wenger if he left the Gunners.

Manchester United enjoyed a lengthy period of success under Sir Alex Ferguson, but have slipped from their spot at the top of the English game since the Scot retired in 2013 after delivering the club's 20th title.

Wenger has just completed 20 years at Arsenal, while Manchester United are on to their third manager of the post-Ferguson era in the shape of Jose Mourinho.

And Kroenke feels the Red Devils show just how hard it is to replace a lengendary boss, in what could be taken as a sign Arsenal will try hard to extend Wenger's contract beyond the end of the season.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Kroenke said: "You see it [at Manchester United], you bring up a comment like that.

"It's very hard. He's a great manager."

Wenger has not let slip whether he would be prepared to extend his stay at Arsenal by signing a new contract, but the Frenchman is a firm favourite of Kroenke, who considers him to be one of the most positive things about the Gunners.

The 67-year-old has been linked with taking over the vacant England job and could well be targeted by the Football Association if he signals he is prepared to call time on his spell with Arsenal.

He last signed a new contract with Arsenal, running until 2017, in 2014.
