Brendan Rodgers says Celtic posted better statistics in their 1-0 win over Rangers on Sunday than they did in the prior meeting between the two teams in September, which the Bhoys won 5-1.

Celtic dominated the Scottish League Cup semi-final tie at Hampden on Sunday, but had to wait until three minutes from time to make the breakthrough, when Moussa Dembele netted.

Rangers goalkeeper Matt Gilks was in superb form throughout the tie against his club's fierce rivals, with Celtic counting themselves unlucky not to have inflicted a heavier defeat on Mark Warburton's men.

Rodgers has now backed up how good he feels his side's performance was, explaining that on almost every statistical measure it was a better display than the 5-1 win in the league.

"The important items from the game were the performance and the result", he told a press conference this afternoon.

"Looking at the analysis, in comparison to the 5-1 win against them, nearly every number in the stats was better.

"That tells you it was a better performance.

"We won the game well. It was a great atmosphere and we enjoyed it."

Celtic are not due to meet their rivals again until December, when they are due to head to Ibrox for a Premiership clash.

And pressure is mounting on Rodgers' opposite number, Warburton, after two games in which his side struggled to show they can compete with Celtic for the Premiership title in the current campaign.
