Arsene Wenger has revealed his disappointment about Arsenal striker Lucas Perez’s ankle injury and admits that it could have been avoided.

Arsenal snapped up the forward from Deportivo La Coruna in the summer and the Spaniard was still getting into the groove of playing in England before he injured his ankle against Reading earlier this week.

Wenger confirmed that the striker will be out for six to eight weeks, but also added that Aaron Ramsey will be in the squad to face Sunderland at the weekend after a lengthy injury layoff.

The Arsenal boss also added that there are concerns about the availability of several players, including Theo Walcott, as a few of them are carrying little niggles.

He said in a press conference: “From Tuesday night we lost Perez to an ankle injury for while, around six to eight weeks.

"We have [Olivier] Giroud back available and Aaron Ramsey will be in the squad, but we have a few uncertainties about [Theo] Walcott, [Nacho] Monreal and [Santi] Cazorla – they have tests today.”

Wenger admits that Perez’s injury was unfortunate as it was a deliberate kick from a Reading player and was avoidable.

“He’s absolutely gutted because it’s an injury coming from nowhere and a stupid one. It was a kick, a deliberate kick.

“It was not needed.”

Arsenal are currently second in the league table behind Manchester City, who are topping the standings due to a better goal difference than the Gunners.
