Former Leeds United star Gary McAllister has warned the Whites that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to win the EFL Cup this season.

The Yorkshire giants are in the quarter-finals of the competition for only the second time in 20 years and are keen to make further progress to book a trip to Wembley.

However, they have been drawn to face Liverpool at Anfield next month and former Whites man McAllister warned his former side not to expect Liverpool to treat them lightly.

The 51-year-old, who also represented Liverpool and has an insight into Klopp's mind through his role as club ambassador, insisted that the German will be keen to win his first piece of silverware as Reds manager and won’t allow his side to take their foot off the pedal against Leeds.

“People always associate this cup competition as one of the least priorities”, the former Red told the club’s official website.

“But Jurgen wants to win.

"If you can get a trophy on the table, it’s massive, the kudos that comes with it and what you can build on.

“You go back to the treble-winning side I played in. Winning the first cup sets the confidence up, the whole belief within the club to go and win others.

"So it’s a great cup to win.”

Klopp came within a whisker winning the EFL Cup last season, but suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City in the final.

Leeds meanwhile last reached the final of the competition in the 1995/96 season, when they lost to Aston Villa.
