Gary McAllister feels that there are clear signs Garry Monk has Leeds United heading in the right direction.

Monk was appointed Leeds boss on a one-year contract in the summer in his first spell back in management since being sacked by Swansea City in December last year.

He has steadied the ship at Elland Road after a tough start and has the Whites in 10th spot in the Championship table, along with through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, where they will play Liverpool at Anfield.

McAllister counts both Liverpool and Leeds amongst his former clubs and believes the Whites should be alongside the Reds in the Premier League.

And he is encouraged by the work being down by Monk at Elland Road.

"It’s a great fixture", he told Liverpool's official site, looking ahead to the EFL Cup game.

"I still see Leeds United as a Premier League side, there’s no doubt in my mind they’d be a plus for the top division.

"It’s a one-club city with a fantastic fanbase.

"They’re punching below their weight but there are definite signs that Leeds are on their way back", McAllister continued.

"They should be in the top division. This fixture goes way back, there have been some great games and great players at both clubs."

Monk's Leeds saw off Norwich City in a penalty shootout on Tuesday night to book their spot in the last eight of the EFL Cup, while Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield 2-1.
