Ray Houghton feels it was an easy decision for Jurgen Klopp to take Joel Matip to Liverpool in the summer.

Matip has formed a fearsome partnership in the centre of defence with Dejan Lovren at Anfield and scored his first goal for the club on Saturday in the Reds' 4-2 win away at Crystal Palace.

The defender is earning plaudits for his displays and is already being spoken about as one of the signings of the season given he did not cost Liverpool a penny to sign, following the expiration of his contract with Schalke.

And Houghton thinks signing Matip was a no-brainer for Klopp.

"He didn't cost anything", Houghton said on LFC TV.

"It was an easy decision for the manager, he knew the player, he knew the league.

"He's settled down really well.

"But there are a lot of Liverpool players who can't get in the team at the moment", the former midfielder added.

Matip has so far clocked up ten appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, helping the Reds to sit joint top of the Premier League standings.

Liverpool have kept three clean sheets in the ten games played with Matip at the back.
