Leeds United have ruled out making a move to sign Joey Barton after being linked with the 34-year-old midfielder.

Barton is parting ways with Scottish giants Rangers after his move to Ibrox failed to work out, with him being slapped with a club suspension following a training ground row with team-mate Andy Halliday, in the wake of the Gers' 5-1 defeat at rivals Celtic.

He signed a two-year deal with Rangers in the summer worth £20,000 per week, but is now looking for a club to join in the January transfer window.

It had been suggested he could link up with Garry Monk's Leeds, but according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites have ruled out making a move for the former Burnley man.

Barton was a standout performer for Burnley last season as he helped the Clarets win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

Leeds could have been attracted to the idea of adding Barton's experience and promotion winning know-how to their ranks in the winter window.

But it appears the Elland Road outfit have calculated that signing Barton is a gamble it is not worth taking.

It also is unclear whether Barton would have considered joining Leeds as the midfielder is claimed to believe he is good enough to play in the Premier League.
