Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that Bastian Schweinsteiger could continue at Old Trafford beyond January.

The veteran German midfielder was told that he was surplus to requirements in the summer and was frozen out of Mourinho’s Manchester United first team squad.

However, the former Germany international persisted and finally did enough to return to training with the first team squad last month, but many feel that Schweinsteiger will eventually leave in January with interest from the MLS and Brazil.

The 32-year-old midfielder made his first appearance for Manchester United since March against West Ham on Wednesday night and it seems his career at Old Trafford has more life than previously thought.

And according to Mourinho the German could last beyond January at Old Trafford as the final decision on his future still rests with Schweinsteiger himself.

"If you have a contract you are the powerful one that can decide your future.

"In the summer we try to make something happen for Bastian to get a different future. He decided to stay in difficult circumstances.

"In January he is the powerful one – and with better feelings than before."

Schweinsteiger still has a contract until 2018 with Manchester United and has showed a willingness to fight for his place in the squad this season.
