Rangers defender Danny Wilson has revealed the relationship he shared with former Hearts manager Robbie Neilson during his time at Tynecastle.

The defender joined Hearts in January 2013 from Liverpool, initially on loan, and played an important role as club captain in gaining promotion back to the top tier in the 2014/15 season.

Neilson, who left Hearts last month for MK Dons, worked with Wilson at Tynecastle during the defender’s stint at the club and the current Rangers man admits that the 36-year-old had a huge influence on his career.

Wilson feels the Hearts fans were not really enthused about Neilson’s appointment following their relegation from the Premiership, but he believes as club captain he forged a wonderful relationship with the then Hearts boss.

Asked about Neilson’s influence on him, the defender said on the official Rangers podcast: “He was great for me.

“He came in at a tough time when the club were relegated and the fans maybe looked down their nose on his appointment, but he always got on with me.

“We had a good relationship and as captain and head coach we both worked well together.

“He has moved on and I wish him well because he was always very fair to me.”

Former Valencia assistant boss Ian Cathro took charge of Hearts earlier this week and his first game as manager will be against Rangers this weekend at Ibrox.
