Leeds United boss Garry Monk says he will assess defender Pontus Jansson on Saturday after he came off early in the Whites' 2-0 defeat at Brighton on Friday night.

The Yorkshire giants were up against it after just 23 minutes at the Amex after Kalvin Phillips handled on the line, trying to keep out a shot, and was sent off, with Brighton then scoring the resulting penalty.

Leeds hung in the game as the clock ticked down, but offered little threat and any faint hopes of drawing level were extinguished in the last ten minutes when Kyle Bartley gave away another penalty, from which Brighton made it 2-0.

There were concerns for Jansson, who was replaced by Liam Cooper in the 88th minute – but Monk says he is not sure what the problem was with the Swede.

He was quoted as saying by BBC Radio Leeds: "It's not clear why Pontus Jansson came off, so we'll assess the players' recoveries tomorrow."

Leeds will be hoping Jansson has no issue as the centre-back has been a key man for the Whites since joining in the summer transfer window.

The Whites will now watch the weekend results closely to see how the loss to Brighton affects their placing.

Leeds are currently fourth in the Championship, but could fall as far as ninth depending on other results.
