Southampton have started negotiations with Ajax aimed at signing midfielder Nemanja Gudelj, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

The Serbia international, who joined Ajax from fellow Eredivisie outfit AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2015, has scored twice and provided as many assists in 13 appearances in all competitions this season, while in total he has turned out 59 times for the Dutch giants, netting seven times and setting up 10 goals.

Southampton have identified Gudelj as a possible January recruit, with the 25-year-old’s present contract with Ajax running until 2020.

It has been claimed that the Saints are already at the negotiating stage with Ajax for the services of Gudelj, and the Dutch club have set the Serbian’s asking price at €7m.

It remains to be seen if Southampton are willing to meet Ajax’s asking price for Gudelj.
