Portuguese Primeira Liga outfit Chaves have zeroed in on Sheffield Wednesday star Filipe Melo as they aim to strengthen their squad.

Chaves, who sit a lofty seventh in the Portuguese top flight, just ten points off the top three, have been hit by a number of injuries, meaning reinforcements are badly needed.

According to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, it is to England and Sheffield Wednesday they are looking, with Melo in their sights.

The Owls signed Melo from Portuguese side Moreirense in the 2015 winter window and he put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year deal at Hillsborough.

He has seen injuries spoil his time in England and has not played for Sheffield Wednesday since the 2014/15 season.

Wednesday have been linked with sending Melo out on loan, with clubs in his homeland keen.

The midfielder, who is now fit again, is keen to clock up regular minutes and return to first team action, meaning a switch to Chaves could be an attractive prospect, especially as they are challenging for a European spot.

Melo, 27, has made six Champioship appearances for the Owls.
