Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp feels his side's 1-0 loss to Southampton was the ‘third best result’ they could have hoped for, but wants the Reds to show a reaction against Manchester United this weekend.

A first half strike from Nathan Redmond was good enough to provide a slender edge to Southampton in their EFL Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool at St. Mary’s.

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius made a couple of good saves to prevent a heavier defeat and Klopp admits that the only saving grace is that his side are going to Anfield for the second leg only 1-0 down.

He told the club’s official website: “[It is] the only comfort! It's the third best result you can get.

“If you don't win, you don't draw, then losing 1-0 is the third best result. I don't like it too much but it's still possible.”

Klopp is expecting his Liverpool side to show their mettle against Southampton in the second leg, but more importantly, he feels the Reds need to do better against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

“This team always shows a reaction and we have to show a reaction in this cup against Southampton – but it would be cool if we could already show a reaction at the weekend, because we probably need a better performance to get something at Old Trafford.”

Liverpool and Manchester United played out a 0-0 draw earlier in the season at Anfield.
