Leeds United have lodged an enquiry about the availability of SPAL defender Francesco Vicari.

The Yorkshire giants are looking to increase their defensive options, which have been stretched of late with a suspension for Pontus Jansson and an injury to Liam Cooper; Leeds also let Sol Bamba go at the end of the summer transfer window without signing a replacement.

Now the Championship side are showing interest in Vicari and have made an enquiry, according to Italian broadcaster Sportitalia.

However, doing a deal this month for the 22-year-old looks a tough ask for the Whites as SPAL, where former Leeds striker Mirco Antenucci is on the books, are keen to keep hold of a player at the top of his game.

SPAL are also in the middle of a promotion push in Serie B, currently sitting in fourth spot in the Italian second tier and within striking distance of the automatic promotion places.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds will still try to tempt SPAL to part with Vicari.

The defender, who started his career at Novara, has turned out for Italy at Under-20 and Under-21 level.

So far this season Vicari has made 15 appearances in Serie B for SPAL.
