Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius is confident that the Reds can turn their EFL Cup semi-final tie against Southampton around at Anfield.

Nathan Redmond’s first half strike allowed the Saints to go into the second leg with a slender 1-0 advantage, but it could have been worse as Karius made a couple of smart saves to keep the Reds in the tie.

Karius, who has coped with criticism this season for his goalkeeping performances, was happy to step up to the plate when Liverpool needed him, but admits that the result remains bitterly disappointing.

The German has insisted that the Reds were looking for an advantage in the first leg, but is confident that at Anfield they have the team to turn the tie around and book a place in the final.

Asked about his performance and the series of shots he saved, Karius told LFC TV: “I wish I could have kept the other one out as well.

“I tried to be there when the team needed me, but all in all we are really disappointed.

“We came here to win the first game, but it makes life a bit more difficult; we are still confident that we can turn it around.”

Simon Mignolet is expected to replace Karius in goal when Liverpool visit Old Trafford this Sunday to take on Manchester United in a big Premier League clash.
