Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has admitted he faces a wait to fully assess the injury Jan Vertonghen picked up in Saturday afternoon's 4-0 crushing of West Brom at White Hart Lane.

Vertonghen was forced off in the 65th minute of the encounter after going over on his left ankle. The Belgian defender appeared to be in some pain and was replaced by Ben Davies.

Losing Vertonghen would be a blow for Spurs, but Pochettino is hopeful that the injury may not be as bad as it appears and he is now set to wait for the final assessment to be made over the next two days.

Pochettino told his club's official site: "We all feel very sad about Jan, it’s disappointed us a lot because it was bad luck in the way that he had the injury.

"We need to wait and hope it’s not as bad as we believe", he continued.

"We will assess him tomorrow and Monday but be sure that we will help him, look after him and try to push him to be available as soon as possible."

Spurs moved up to second spot in the Premier League table, seven points behind Chelsea, following the win, which was secured via a hat-trick from Harry Kane and a West Brom own goal.

Pochettino will be desperate to have Vertonghen available for selection for his side's next game, which comes away at Manchester City next Saturday in another acid test for the title contenders.
