West Ham United are coming round to the idea of letting Dimitri Payet leave for Marseille in January, despite publicly saying otherwise, according to French sports daily L’Equipe.

The France international wants to move to his former employers Marseille and is hence refusing to turn out for the Hammers.

Although he is currently not under consideration by manager Slaven Bilic, West Ham have time and again insisted that they have no plans to sell Payet, restating their position at the weekend.

However, privately, West Ham are considering letting the attacking midfielder leave for Marseille, but for the right place, with the east London outfit already looking for his replacement.

Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud and sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta are set to travel to London to meet West Ham’s hierarchy in an attempt to sign Payet.

The French giants are prepared to put forward an improved bid for the 29-year-old, whose present contract with West Ham runs until 2021; Marseille’s previous bid of €22m+ €3m in bonus payments was rejected by the Hammers.

Payet, who joined West Ham from Marseille in the summer of 2015, has thus far made 22 appearances in all competitions for the English side this season, scoring three times and setting up eight goals.
