West Brom have slapped in an offer of around £8m for Southampton defender Jose Fonte, but the Portugal international prefers a switch to West Ham.

Fonte has slapped in a transfer request at St. Mary's and is hoping to move on this month, despite the Saints being reluctant to deplete their defensive resources by letting him leave.

He has been linked with Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool, but it appears that West Brom or West Ham are more likely destinations.

Indeed, according to the BBC, the Baggies have now put in an offer of £8m for the experienced centre-back as the race for his signature starts to heat up.

However, it has been suggested that Tony Pulis' men may be left disappointed as Fonte would rather pack his bags for the London Stadium to join Slaven Bilic's West Ham.

West Brom's salvo though is likely to push the transfer saga closer to a conclusion, with the winter window now in full swing.

The 33-year-old joined Southampton in 2010 following a spell at Crystal Palace.

A Portugal international, Fonte helped his country win Euro 2016 last summer.
