West Ham United appear to have cooled their interest in Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia after closing in on Jose Fonte.

The Hammers are beating off competition from West Brom to land the Portugal international, who is keen to leave Southampton for the London Stadium.

Ranocchia's agents flew to England on Friday for talks with West Ham and Hull, while Chelsea were also claimed to be keen on the defender with a loan possible.

Now, according to Italian outlet Fantagazzetta, West Ham appear to have dropped out of the running for Ranocchia.

The Hammers are set to pay an initial £8m to sign Fonte from Southampton and the Portuguese's arrival seems set to shut the door on Ranocchia.

The news will be a boost to the Inter defender's other suitors, a group which also contains clubs within Italy.

Ranocchia has fallen out of favour at Inter and is looking to secure regular first team football during the second half of the season.

The defender spent time on loan at Sampdoria last term.
