Liverpool legend John Aldridge considers Joel Matip being eligible for selection a timely boost for the Reds.

The defender, who has been in fine form since joining Liverpool from Schalke on a free transfer in the summer, refused to represent Cameroon in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations by saying that he has retired from international football.

FECAFOOT complained to the FIFA regarding the issue and Matip missed Liverpool’s last two matches in all competitions as the club sought clarity on his eligibility.

However, FIFA have dismissed the charges against the player, who can now play in the vital Premier League clash against Swansea City later in the day, and he has been named on the bench.

With Liverpool set to play five games in all competitions between now and 4th February, Aldridge has welcomed the news of Matip being cleared to play for the Merseyside giants during the crucial juncture of the season.

“Timely boost for the Reds, especially with the games coming thick and fast”, he tweeted along with posting a picture of the news about Matip.

“[Dejan] Lovren, [Joe] Gomes, [Ragnar] Klavan and Matip, four centre-halves ready.”

Liverpool, who are third in the Premier League, are also still alive in the two domestic cup competitions – the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
