Rangers legend Derek Johnstone believes the Gers will let Barrie McKay leave if he really wants to quit the club.

The 22-year-old winger has been linked with leaving Ibrox soon, with RB Leipzig interested in snapping him up after he put in an impressive performance against the German outfit in a friendly game earlier in the month.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton has recently said that his side are not willing to lose their star player for less than they feel he is worth.

And Johnstone feels Warburton will not be keen to lose McKay, whose present contract with Rangers runs until 2018.

However, the 63-year-old, who thinks Rangers will not stand in McKay’s way if he really wants to leave the club, wants the Light Blues to sell him in the summer to maximise the transfer fee.

“Mark is right to say that if the player wants to go then Rangers will only sell him at the right price. We won’t just give him away”, he wrote in his column in the Evening Times.

“The manager would want to keep him because he is a good player, but if Barrie wants to go then I think we will let him go.

“If he doesn’t sign a new contract before the end of the season and he lets it go into the last year then that leaves Rangers in a position they don’t want to be in.

“If Barrie makes it clear he won’t sign on again, then Rangers would need to look to sell him in the summer to maximise the transfer fee.

“Barrie is a young lad that has come through the Rangers system and if they do get a couple of million for him then that is what the business model is all about.”

McKay has thus far made 28 appearances in all competitions for Rangers this season, scoring three times and setting up nine goals.
