Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has branded the atmosphere at Ibrox “fantastic”, but insisted that the best setting he has thus far played in would be when he turned out for Newcastle United against Sunderland.

The Englishman, who joined the Gers from Port Vale on a three-and-a-half-year deal during the January transfer window, is yet to make his first team debut for the Scottish giants.

Alnwick was snapped up by Newcastle United’s academy from their rivals Sunderland in 2008, with the custodian going on to make eight senior appearances in all competitions for the Magpies.

During his time at St James’ Park, Alnwick played in one Tyne-Wear derby; Sunderland won that Premier League contest in December 2014 by a narrow 1-0 margin.

And the 23-year-old explained that as he is yet to play at Ibrox, the best atmosphere he has played in would be the clash against Sunderland at St James’ Park.

“Obviously I’ve not been here long enough and the atmosphere is brilliant up here”, Alnwick told Rangers TV, when asked about the best atmosphere he has played in.

“But having played in one, I would have to say the Newcastle and Sunderland derby.”

Alnwick recently featured for the Under-20s in their 1-0 win over Kilmarnock in a development league game and will be hoping to turn out at Ibrox for the Gers soon.
