Martin Keown believes that Arsenal should put themselves in the mix for Yaya Toure if he does not sign a new contract at Manchester City.

The jury is out on whether the Ivorian will put pen to paper on a fresh deal to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium, or whether he will be playing his football elsewhere next season.

Toure was regularly overlooked by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in the first half of the campaign, but fought his way back into the team in the second half of the season.

Keown thinks that despite the midfielder now being 34 years old, he still has much to offer.

And the Arsenal legend would like to see Toure at the Emirates Stadium.

"I wonder whether Yaya Toure will sign a new contract with Man City", Keown mused on the BBC's Final Score programme.

"If he doesn't, someone like Arsenal should be in the queue chasing after him.

"I still feel he has a great lot to offer and he's been part of the improvement of Man City in the second half of the season", he added.

Toure helped Manchester City to a third place finish in the Premier League this season, which means Champions League group stage football next term.

If the former Barcelona star joined Arsenal, he would only have Europa League football on the agenda as the Gunners finished fifth this season.
