Ray Houghton believes the Liverpool owners owe Jurgen Klopp a summer of big spending in the transfer market.

Klopp led Liverpool to a top four finish in the Premier League on Sunday, courtesy of 3-0 home win over an already relegated Middlesbrough side at Anfield.

Liverpool will be back in the Champions League next season, though they will have to play in the playoff round to reach the group stage.

Klopp is expected to make signings to strengthen his squad and Houghton has called on Liverpool's American owners Fenway Sports Group to put big money at the German's disposal.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder stressed that Klopp has so far made a profit for the club in the transfer market and as such deserves the chance to spend.

"I can't wait to see who he gets in", Houghton said on LFC TV.

"If you look at his record in the transfer market since he's been here I think it's actually positive, he's £13m up.

"So the owners owe it to him to give him some good money to go out and spend on the right players that are going to improve Liverpool next season and try to get even closer to the top teams because they are going to spend and there is only a small pool of talent in world football.

"You've got to be in the mix to try to get those to the club", he added.

Klopp has already ruled out making a move for a new goalkeeper in the summer transfer window and it remains to be seen what positions the German looks to strengthen.
