Ollie Watkins' former manager says that he can see why the Exeter City striker has been linked with a move to Leeds United.

The Yorkshire giants have been mooted as keen on Watkins, along with fellow Championship side Bristol City, meaning Exeter face a tough ask keeping hold of the 21-year-old.

Watkins played under manager Ryan Northmore during a spell at Weston-super-Mare in the 2014/15 campaign, which saw the youngster score ten goals in 18 games in the rough and tumble of the National League South.

Northmore says he can understand just why Watkins is linked with Leeds and believes Whites head coach Garry Monk being aware of goings on a Exeter is part of the reason.

"I can understand the link with Leeds and why they would want him", he told the Bristol Post.

"Garry Monk took Matt Grimes to Swansea from Exeter so there is that link with Paul Tisdale at Exeter.

"That’s a well-established link for Monk", Northmore added.

Leeds are looking to increase their options ahead of next season, with up top and giving support to talisman Chris Wood a priority.

The Whites had been aiming to sign another striker in the winter transfer window, but ended up signing two wingers on loan in the shape of Modou Barrow and Alfonso Pedraza.
