Newcastle United are showing an interest in their former midfielder Mehdi Abeid ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Algeria international spent close to four years on Newcastle United’s books before securing a permanent transfer to Panathinaikos in the summer of 2015.




The midfielder joined Ligue 1 outfit Dijon last year and was in impressive form for the French club this season, making 28 league appearances, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

And it seems Abeid his reawakened the interest of his former employers as according to French sports daily L’Equipe, Newcastle have been closely monitoring his performances.
 


Rafael Benitez is showing an interest in taking Abeid back to the north east of England in the summer as he looks to build a squad good enough to survive and thrive in the Premier League.

Abeid made just 21 senior appearances for the Magpies during his first stint at the club and could get an opportunity to add to that figure next season.

The 24-year-old, who has a contract until 2019 with Dijon, has five international caps to his name for Algeria.
