Former Porto midfielder Costinha has stressed that it was wrong for many to doubt Jose Mourinho’s calibre as a manager this season.

Mourinho won his second Europa League trophy and fourth European honour as a manager when Manchester United comfortably beat Ajax 2-0 in the final at the Friends Arena.

After giving up on finishing in the top four of the Premier League in the last few weeks, the Portuguese hedged all his bets on winning the Europa League to get into next season’s Champions League.

And Mourinho’s gambled paid off on Wednesday night as he finished his first season as Manchester United with two trophies and Costinha insisted that people were too quick to doubt his former manager.

The former Porto midfielder, who won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League under Mourinho, feels that the Portuguese was bound to bounce back this season at Old Trafford.

Costinha told L’Equipe when asked about Mourinho: “I don’t know why people doubted him.

“Coaches like him, [Antonio] Conte, [Carlo] Ancelotti, [Pep] Guardiola – if they don’t succeed one year, they will do it next year.”

Mourinho’s team also booked a ticket to the UEFA Super Cup on 8th August where they will face either Real Madrid or Juventus.
