Andrea Radrizzani has defended Leeds United's efforts to keep Garry Monk, following the head coach's resignation from the club.

The new Leeds chairman announced earlier this week that he wanted to activate an option in Monk's contract to keep him at Elland Road for a further year, before then discussing a longer term deal.

But Monk has opted to resign from his post, leaving the Whites reeling and now looking for his successor.

It has been suggested that Monk wanting longer than a one-year deal is the reason behind his departure, but Radrizzani insists he wanted to hand the head coach a three-year contract.

And the chairman insists Leeds did their best when he came to trying to keep Monk, with him having been left stunned by the development.

Radrizzani wrote on Twitter: "Shocking news from GM.

"We were keen to do 3 years deal.

"We never receive any request from him and his agent.

"No regrets, we did our best", the Italian added.

Monk led Leeds to a finish of seventh spot in the Championship last term with only a late season tumble in form meaning the Whites missed out on reaching the playoffs.

The club will now have to build again under a new head coach.
