Reading midfielder John Swift admits that leaving Chelsea last summer was risky, but insists he had to take the decision to move forward.

A product of the Chelsea academy, the 21-year-old midfielder struggled to break into the first team and finally agreed to join Reading, being tempted to the club by Jaap Stam.

The young midfielder has grown in stature at Reading this season and has played a key role in their run to the Championship playoff final, where they will be taking on Huddersfield Town at Wembley on Monday.

While he believes that leaving Chelsea was the sensible choice, he also admits that it had an element of risk and he is glad his gamble to move on from west London has paid off.

Swift said in a press conference: “Leaving Chelsea was sensible, but risky.

“But it's come off.

"I have first team football and I'm glad I moved.”

The midfielder added that he has received positive messages from some of his old Chelsea team-mates ahead of the playoff final.

“I've had a lot of good luck messages from Chelsea players which is great.”

Swift made a solitary senior appearance for Chelsea before leaving the club last summer.
