Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha appears to have begun to line up a deal for midfielder Carlos Pena not long after taking the hot seat at Ibrox.

The Mexico midfielder is set to join the Gers from Chivas, with Caixinha having handed Pena the chance to play his football in Europe for the first time in his career.

Caixinha has acted quickly following the end of the season, making his moves in the transfer market, but despite vowing to assess the Rangers squad when he walked through the door in March, the Pena deal appears to have been several months in the making.

Indeed, according to Mexican outlet Multimedios, Caixinha started negotiations to sign Pena earlier this year, in the middle of the Mexican Clausura tournament; the Clausura started in January.

The Rangers boss spoke to Pena to explain he wanted him at Ibrox, with the player's agent also going to work on his client's behalf.
